EVACUATION ZONE REDUCED — 6 PM press conference
At the 6 PM press conference today, officials shrunk the evacuation zone significantly. About 34,000 residents can now return home. The smaller zone is bounded by Orangewood Avenue (N), Garden Grove Boulevard (S), Knott Street (W), and Dale Street (E) — roughly 16,000 residents remain inside. If you live OUTSIDE this new box, officials say day-to-day activities can resume. If you live INSIDE the new box, do not return — shelters remain open. Check the map below for the updated boundary.

Today's brief
A federal emergency declaration was signed today (May 25). The tank developed a controlled crack that released the internal pressure, removing the BLEVE (large boiling-liquid expanding-vapor explosion) risk — but OCFA Chief McGovern warned that "the crisis is not averted" and a smaller release is still possible. Tank temperature has stabilized at ~93°F with no active leak. At the 6 PM press conference officials reduced the evacuation zone — only ~16,000 residents (down from ~50,000) remain inside the new smaller box (Orangewood / GG Blvd / Knott / Dale). If you live outside the new box, you can return home. If you live inside, shelters remain open — call OC Public Info (714) 628-7085 before driving over.
Thank you to our first responders
A huge thank you to OCFA, Garden Grove PD, Garden Grove Fire, Orange County Sheriff, Cal OES, and every law-enforcement and fire crew working around the clock to keep our community safe. We see your work and we are grateful.

What you see on the map
- Incident location (GKN Aerospace)
- Blast zones if tank explodes
- Official evacuation zone
- Evacuation shelters
- 24 Hour Fitness — day-use (showers, A/C)
Plume cone — where the vapor may drift
- Inner zone (red). Immediate danger — highest concentration. ~10% of total plume reach.
- Middle zone (orange). Significant exposure risk — leave area or shelter indoors. Out to ~20% of total reach.
- Outer zone (yellow). Sharp / fruity odor zone — extends to full plume reach (now capped at ~2 mi, since the major explosion risk has been eliminated and only smaller releases are still possible). If you can smell it, go inside and close windows.
Cone width & reach adjust with wind speed, cloud cover, and time of day (Pasquill stability). Note: methyl methacrylate is heavier than air — actual vapor may settle in low areas or follow streets and valleys rather than a smooth cone shape.
Air quality sensors — colored ring meaning
- AQI 0–50 · Good. Air quality is good. No precautions needed.
- AQI 51–100 · Moderate. Air is acceptable. Unusually sensitive people should limit outdoor exertion.
- AQI 101–150 · Unhealthy for sensitive groups. Children, seniors, and people with heart or lung conditions should reduce outdoor activity.
- AQI 151–200 · Unhealthy. Everyone should reduce outdoor activity. Stay indoors if possible.
- AQI 201–300 · Very unhealthy. Avoid outdoor activity. Keep windows closed.
- AQI 301+ · Hazardous. Health emergency. Stay indoors with windows closed and air filtering on.
